Raiders sign Joseph Tapine

The Canberra Raiders have officially announced the signing of former Newcastle Knights player Joseph Tapine, on a new four year contract effective immediately.

Tapine, 21, joined his new Raiders team mates at Raiders HQ for the first time today, after receiving a release from the final year of his contract with the Newcastle Knights earlier this week.

Tapine said he was ready to tackle the challenge of working his way into the Raiders NRL team and said he was impressed with what he saw in the Raiders trial match last weekend. Read more

Papalii re-signs with the Raiders

The Canberra Raiders have continued securing their talent, with news today that superstar second rower Josh Papalii has re-signed with the club until the end of the 2018 season.

Papalii joins Jack Wighton, Shannon Boyd and Joey Leilua who have all recently re-signed with the club.

2015 was a huge season for Papalii, as he regained his Queensland State of Origin Jersey with a string of outstanding performances for the Raiders. Papalii played all 24 matches for the Raiders in 2015 and passed 100 NRL career matches. Read more

Rapana re-signs with the Raiders

Raiders outside back Jordan Rapana has agreed to a new two year deal with the Raiders, which will see him remain with the club until the end of the 2017 season.

Rapana’s current deal was for the end of the current season, but his outstanding start to 2015 has allowed him to secure a new deal with the club which threw him an NRL lifeline mid-way through 2013 after a five year hiatus from the code.

Now after securing a new two year deal Rapana is looking to continue his NRL career with the Raiders and said he wants to repay the faith the club has showed in him. Read more

Tilse to depart Raiders for Hull KR

Canberra Raiders prop Dane Tilse will depart the club after round seven this season, to take up a two-and-a-half year deal with Hull KR in the English Super League.

Tilse will have the opportunity to be selected for his 200th Raiders match next weekend against the Melbourne Storm at home and will line up in his 199th match against Manly this weekend when the team travel to Albury to take on the Sea Eagles.

Contracted until the end of the 2016 season with the Raiders, Tilse said the decision to ask for an early release was based on an opportunity presented by Hull KR after the retirement through injury of former Raider Michael Weyman. Read more

Sea Eagles to play Raiders in Albury

In a huge boost for rugby league in regional NSW, the Manly Warringah Sea Eagles have today confirmed they will play their Round Five NRL fixture at Lavington Sports Ground in Albury against the Canberra Raiders.

The Easter Saturday clash on April 4 will be the first time the region has played host to an official NRL Premiership match, with the border city only previously hosting NRL pre-season trials and a City-Country Origin fixture in 2011.

The announcement that the Club is venturing to regional NSW to host the fixture, follows several star players – Jamie Buhrer, Justin Horo, Jesse Sene-Lefao and Wee Waa’s Jamie Lyon – spending time in Northern NSW earlier this month spreading messages about healthy living, eating and wellbeing in conjunction with running clinics to grow the game in the bush. Raiders sign Sam Williams

The Raiders will welcome home local junior Sam Williams to the club in 2015, after he signed a two year deal with the club to return to where he began his NRL career.

Williams is currently playing for Catalans Dragons in the English Super League, after a mid-season switch from the St George Illawarra Dragons.

Originally from Cooma in NSW, Williams was a star for the Raiders junior grades before making his NRL debut in 2011, playing 42 matches for the Raiders until he departed at the end of the 2013 season. Read more

Raiders re-sign Shaun Fensom

The Raiders have received a huge boost ahead of their first home match of the season, with Shaun Fensom agreeing to a new three year deal that will keep him at the club until the end of the 2017 season.

Fensom is a two time winner of the Meninga Medal (2011, 2012) which is awarded to the best player each season for the Raiders and has been an instrumental part of the Raiders team since he made his debut in 2009 after captaining the Raiders NYC team to a premiership in 2008.

Fensom said he’s thrilled to be remaining in Canberra where his career began and said he can now concentrate on performing each week for the Raiders. Read more

Milford wins 2013 Meninga Medal

Raiders star rookie Anthony Milford has capped off a wonderful debut season in the NRL, by winning the 2013 Meninga Medal for the best and fairest player in the Raiders NRL squad.

Milford polled 19 votes in the Medal count in his 18 matches, in a debut season which announced his arrival on the NRL stage.

Points for the Meninga Medal are awarded in a 3-2-1 format for each game of the regular NRL season, and allocated based on player votes after each match. Read more

Cornish debut blocked by NRL

The NRL debut of Mitch Cornish this Sunday against the Sharks at Canberra Stadium has been halted, after the NRL salary cap auditor blocked the opportunity for Cornish to play.

Raiders CEO Don Furner said the Raiders were extremely disappointed by the decision from the NRL and said it’s taken away the chance for a young player to have his special moment.

“We provided information to the NRL salary cap auditor which we believed stated a strong case for exemption for Mitch to play on Sunday and we are extremely disappointed with the response,” Furner said. Read more

NRL issue infraction notice

The NRL today issued Canberra player Sandor Earl with an Infraction Notice and has accepted an immediate provisional suspension for breaches of the Leagues Anti-Doping Policy.

The provisional suspension follows evidence relating to Mr Earl obtained by the NRL relating to the use and trafficking of the peptide CJC 1295 and other prohibited substances.

Sandor Earl has agreed to continue to assist with the investigation and is seeking to obtain the benefit of substantial assistance provisions. Read more
