Canberra to host 2017 ANZAC Test

Canberra will host the 2017 ANZAC Test between Australia and New Zealand, on Friday May 5.

The announcement was made today at the Australian War Memorial in Canberra by Deputy Chief Minister Yvette Berry, alongside Canberra Raiders’ representative players Shannon Boyd and Jordan Rapana, as well as NRL Ambassador Alan Tongue.

NRL Head of Football Brian Canavan said GIO Stadium would be a fitting venue for the 2017 ANZAC Test. Read more

Roosters win 2017 Auckland Nines

It was the year of the Rooster at the 2017 NRL Auckland Nines, with the Sydney Roosters taking out the final against the Penrith Panthers, 10–8.

The Roosters held a 10–0 lead at half-time, with Daniel Tupou and Bernard Lewis scoring tries in both the semi-final (against the Storm) and final.

Malakai Watene-Zelezniak crossed for the Panthers in the second half, but it wasn’t enough in the end. Read more

2017 NRL Auckland Nines – day one summary

Six teams remain undefeated after 99 tries were scored on the first day of the NRL Auckland Nines at Eden Park.

The Sharks and Titans opened the Nines with Kane Elgey scoring the first try of the tournament and recording a successful return to rugby league after a lengthy injury stint.

The Panthers, Sea Eagles and Eels secured two wins from two outings, while all three Queensland teams (Broncos, Cowboys and Titans) head into day two in good shape. Read more

2017 NRL Premiership Draw Launched

The reigning Premiers, the Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks will open the 2017 National Rugby League Premiership in a blockbuster match against the Brisbane Broncos.

NRL CEO Todd Greenberg today launched the 2017 schedule which includes a reduction in five day turnarounds, the introduction of a 6pm Friday game and matches in every mainland State of Australia.

The season will kick off with the Downer NRL Auckland Nines (February 4 and 5) and the popular Harvey Norman Rugby League All Stars game which will be held at Newcastle for the first time on February 10. Read more

New State Based Competitions

Two new State based competitions will be run in NSW and Queensland from 2018 as part of a new pathway program for elite NRL players.

Under the new structure, approved by the Australian Rugby League Commission, each competition will be expanded and decentralised to comprise up to 16 second tier clubs.

NRL Head of Football, Brian Canavan said all NRL clubs will be encouraged to form partnerships with two of these teams from which they will draw talent for the NRL Premiership. Read more

Perth to Host State of Origin in 2019

Australian sport’s greatest rivalry, State of Origin, will head to Perth for the first time in 2019.

The NRL can today announce that Game Two of the 2019 State of Origin series will be played at the new Perth Stadium.

It will be the first time, barring the 1987 exhibition match in Los Angeles, an Origin match has been played outside of the eastern states of Australia. Read more

Eels win 2016 NRL Auckland Nines

Parramatta has secured the 2016 NRL Auckland Nines following a 22-4 victory over the Warriors in the final.

Eels captain Corey Norman was named the tournament’s most valuable player following the final, at Eden Park.

Norman joined his teammates Bevan French, who finished the tournament with eight tries, as well as Semi Radradra, in the Team of the Tournament. Read more

2016 NRL Auckland Nines – Day One Review

Melbourne, Manly and Cronulla will be the only unbeaten teams heading into tomorrow’s day two of the NRL Auckland Nines.

The Storm toppled defending premiers South Sydney as well as Parramatta, while the Sea Eagles surprised crowd favourites the Warriors, who were left with a win and a loss following the first day of the tournament.

The Sharks, last year’s grand finalists, proved again they would be difficult to beat by toppling both Gold Coast and St George Illawarra. Read more

Perth to host October Test

Perth will host its first ever Rugby League international in 2016 – a clash between Australia and New Zealand on October 15.

The nib Stadium Test match will be staged prior to the 2016 Four Nations Tournament in the UK and will be an important lead-in match for both teams.

New Kangaroos coach Mal Meninga, Kiwi counterpart Stephen Kearney and Manly’s Kiwi international Martin Taupau were on hand to make the announcement at Perth’s nib Stadium today, alongside WA Minister for Sport and Recreation Mia Davies. Read more

Coaches name teams for NRL All Stars match

Some of the biggest names in the NRL have been chosen to play in the annual All Stars match in Brisbane in February.

For the first time, a World All Stars team has been chosen to take on the reigning champion Indigenous All Stars team at Suncorp Stadium on February 13.

It will include stars of the calibre of Roger Tuivasa-Sheck, Semi Radradra, James Graham and Martin Taupau. Read more
