Bulls go down to Redbacks

The Queensland Bulls face a must-win Sheffield Shield clash against Tasmania next week after going down to the South Australian Redbacks by six-wickets today in Adelaide.

The loss leaves the Bulls fifth on the Shield ladder, needing success in Hobart next week to keep their finals hopes alive.

The match was in a tense position when play resumed today, with the Redbacks needing 120-runs and the Bulls another six wickets for victory. Read more

Heat serve up a winner

Former world ranked tennis player Ash Barty will launch the next phase of her sporting career today with the Brisbane Heat announcing she has signed to play in the inaugural Women’s Big Bash League this summer.

The 19-year-old Ipswich product is the 11th player to be contracted by the WBBL Heat and comes just a matter of months after she approached Queensland Cricket to explore her options of making a switch in sports.

Barty has since joined Western Suburbs in the Brisbane Women’s Premier Cricket competition and top-scored last weekend in her first T20 match with 63 not out from 60 balls, including two sixes, as well as taking 2-13 from four overs. Read more

Bulls take Shield game to Mackay

First-class cricket will return to Central Queensland this summer with Mackay to host the Queensland Bulls in a Sheffield Shield match in December.

The Bulls will face the New South Wales Blues at Harrup Park from December 6–9, the first time a Sheffield Shield match has been played in the region.

The clash will be Mackay’s second major domestic match held during the 2015-16 season with the Queensland Academy of Sport also announced to play Tasmania in a Futures League game from October 19–22. Read more

McCullum signs for the Heat

The Brisbane Heat will rekindle its ties with New Zealand World Cup hero Brendon McCullum, with the Black Caps captain agreeing to a three-year Twenty20 Big Bash League deal.

McCullum, 33, played three games for Brisbane in BBL|01 and will make his return to the Heat colours in BBL|05 this summer.

He will also resume his close ties with Heat coach Daniel Vettori, who played alongside him in the inaugural year of the BBL as well as throughout their illustrious New Zealand careers. Read more

Former Paceman back with the Bulls

Queensland Cricket will welcome back former fast bowler Ashley Noffke in a full-time coaching role to guide and develop its elite teams in the 2015-16 season.

Noffke, who took 242 first class wickets in 68 games for Queensland in a career that also saw him play ODI and T20 cricket for Australia, will be an Assistant Coach to Queensland Bulls coach Phil Jaques for the coming summer.

The 38-year-old was previously a bowling coach for Queensland Cricket in 2011 and the Brisbane Heat in their BBL|02 championship season, before stepping back to concentrate on business interests on the Sunshine Coast. Read more

Bulls announce 2015-16 Squad

The Queensland Bulls will welcome four new faces to their squad for the 2015-16 season with the contracting process finalised this week.

Charlie Hemphrey, Simon Milenko and Peter George, who each made their Queensland debuts during the recent season, have been awarded with Senior contracts.

19-year-old Sam Heazlett who recently scored 160 for the Australian U19s against England in their current series in Perth has earned a Rookie contract. Read more

Burns caps memorable season

A breakthrough year for Joe Burns received its crowning glory tonight as the Australian batsman in waiting was awarded the Ian Healy Trophy at the 2014-15 Queensland Cricket Awards night.

Burns, who made his Test debut in the Boxing Day Test against India, claimed the trophy for the first time after a season that saw him finish as the leading runs-scorer for the Queensland Bulls in the Sheffield Shield.

Burns, who was also the Bulls Shield Player of the Year, racked up 793 runs at 52.86, finishing with a match winning century against South Australia in the final round. Read more

Heat welcome Coach Vettori

The Brisbane Heat has appointed foundation player Daniel Vettori as their KFC T20 Big Bash League coach for the next three years.

The vastly experienced New Zealander will become the first stand-alone coach of the Heat since the inception of the BBL in 2011, with his appointment not including the role as my FootDr Queensland Bulls coach in the Bupa Sheffield Shield and Matador One Day Cup.

Vettori, who also coaches Royal Challengers Bangalore in the Indian Premier League, will take up his new off-field role with the Heat after the Indian Premier League, which gets underway next week. Read more

Khawaja on track for ‘A’ Tour

Usman Khawaja is on track to make a return from a knee reconstruction in time for the Australia ‘A’ tour to India in July, with the Queensland Bulls batsman aiming to be in the nets by the end of next month.

Khawaja, who ruptured his ACL while training with the Sydney Thunder just prior to the start of the T20 Big Bash League in December, is currently working on a rehabilitation and strengthening program for his knee but has targeted a return to the nets by the end of May or start of June.

“It will around the seven month mark when the ‘A’ tour gets underway so all going to schedule, I will have had enough time to be back batting well before then,’’ he said. Read more

Huge Summer ahead for Brisbane fans

Queensland Cricket will host the opening rounds of the new Matador BBQs One Day Cup tournament at the Gabba and Allan Border Field for the first time as part of a mammoth summer of cricket in 2014-15.

Between September 2014 and April 2015, Brisbane will feature more than 75 days of top flight cricket.

The Gabba will host the First Commonwealth Bank Test match between number one ranked Australia and India from Thursday 4 – Monday 8 December. Read more
