Rabbitohs extend Kyle Turner’s contract

The South Sydney Rabbitohs have extended the contract of back rower Kyle Turner until at least the end of the 2019 season.

Turner, 25, has played 56 NRL games for the Rabbitohs since making his first grade debut against the Tigers in 2014, and has gone on to represent the Indigenous All Stars on two occasions.

Originally from Coonabarabran in country NSW, Turner has overcome a serious neck injury to establish himself in the first grade squad at South Sydney. Read more

Sam Burgess returns to the Rabbitohs

The South Sydney Rabbitohs have signed dual International, Sam Burgess, with the Englishman re-joining the Club until at least the end of the 2018 season, it was announced today.

Burgess, 26, will re-join his only NRL Club, the Rabbitohs, after a 12-month period in English Rugby where he played five Rugby Test matches for England including the 2015 Rugby World Cup, one match for England Saxons and 26 appearances for Bath.

Burgess played 96 NRL matches for South Sydney, including a Clive Churchill Medal-winning performance in the 2014 NRL Grand Final where he played virtually the entire game with a fractured face following a head-clash with fellow Englishman, James Graham of the Bulldogs. Read more

Lowe announces his retirement

South Sydney Rabbitohs forward Ben Lowe has announced his retirement from Rugby League following an NRL career that has spanned eight seasons.

Lowe, 30, played 117 first grade games for South Sydney between 2008 and 2015, having made his first grade debut against the Bulldogs in round two of the 2008 season.

In 2010, Ben was named 18th man for the Queensland State of Origin side, played lock in the Rabbitohs’ victory in the 2015 World Club Challenge, and was part of the Rabbitohs’ squad for the 2014 Grand Final. Read more

Rabbitohs appoint Inglis as 2015 Captain

Rabbitohs fullback, and Queensland and Australian representative player, Greg Inglis, has been named captain of the Club for 2015.

Inglis, who filled in as captain during the Rabbitohs’ 2014 Premiership-winning season, has taken up the reins from team mate John Sutton who remains as a senior member and leader amongst the group.

Rabbitohs Coach Michael Maguire says the appointment of Inglis as captain will help refresh the squad ahead of a big season. Read more

Sam Burgess crowned RLIF Player of the Year

Clive Churchill Medal winner Sam Burgess has become the first English winner of the RLIF International Player of the Year Award at a function in Brisbane.

Burgess held off a group of nominees which included fellow English international James Graham, Dally M Medal winners Johnathan Thurston and Jarryd Hayne, as well as Man of Steel winner Daryl Clark, to win the prestigious award at the Royal International Convention Centre, Brisbane.

“Sam was wonderful for England in the World Cup last year and his performances for South Sydney through the NRL season were first-class, all the way to his Clive Churchill Medal effort in the grand final against Canterbury-Bankstown,” RLIF chairman Nigel Wood said. Read more

Dragons to play in World Club Series

The St George Illawarra Dragons have accepted their invitation to participate in next year’s World Club Series.

The European Super League have confirmed that the Dragons will join the South Sydney Rabbitohs and the Brisbane Broncos in the series which will be played in the United Kingdom over three days from February 20-22 next year.

The tournament will culminate with the World Club Challenge to determine the best Rugby League team in the world. Read more

Rabbitohs sign Glenn Stewart

The South Sydney Rabbitohs have signed representative and premiership-winning forward Glenn Stewart for the 2015 and 2016 seasons today.

Stewart, 30, has played 184 NRL matches since making his debut for the Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles in 2003. Stewart has played in four NRL Grand Finals with the Sea Eagles in 2007, 2008, 2011 and 2013, claiming premierships in the 2008 and 2011 seasons as well as the Clive Churchill Medal for man-of-the-match in the Grand Final in 2011.

Stewart has also represented Australia in five Tests in 2008 and 2009; NSW in five State of Origin clashes in 2009 and 2012; played three games for Country Origin in 2008, 2010 and 2011; and played for the Prime Minister’s XIII against Papua New Guinea in 2009. Read more

Rabbitohs release Sam Burgess

The South Sydney Rabbitohs have released forward Sam Burgess from the final two years of his NRL contract, finishing up his time at the Rabbitohs at the conclusion of the 2014 season.

Burgess remains contracted to the Rabbitohs for season 2014 and is set to head to England to play rugby union for Bath Rugby at the end of the year to fulfill a long-held ambition to become a dual-international, with the opportunity to play in the 2015 Rugby World Cup and English club rugby success.

The Rabbitohs recently received a request from Burgess for a release from his contract which, after long discussions, has been granted, with the Rabbitohs negotiating an undisclosed release fee. Read more

Rabbitohs extend Maguire’s contract

The South Sydney Rabbitohs are delighted to announce today the contract extension of Head Coach Michael Maguire until the end of the 2017 season.

Maguire began his coaching tenure at South Sydney in the 2012 season, and has now taken the team to consecutive Preliminary Final appearances in his two seasons as Head Coach.

Maguire has a 68% winning percentage as a Head Coach in the NRL, having won 36 of 53 matches. Read more

Rabbitohs sign Lote Tuqiri for 2014 Season

The South Sydney Rabbitohs have signed dual international Lote Tuqiri for the 2014 season today.

Tuqiri, 34, brings with him a wealth of experience playing at the highest level in two football codes in the outside backs, having represented Australia in both Rugby League and Rugby Union over a 15-year professional sporting career.

Tuqiri, who stands 191cm tall and weighs 106kg, has played 151 NRL matches since making his debut for the Brisbane Broncos in 1999, playing 99 matches for the Broncos and 52 matches for the Wests Tigers. Read more
