Dragons to play in World Club Series

The St George Illawarra Dragons have accepted their invitation to participate in next year’s World Club Series.

The European Super League have confirmed that the Dragons will join the South Sydney Rabbitohs and the Brisbane Broncos in the series which will be played in the United Kingdom over three days from February 20-22 next year.

The tournament will culminate with the World Club Challenge to determine the best Rugby League team in the world. Read more

Dragons and Tigers to play at SCG

In a stunning celebration of one of Rugby League’s most revered moments, St George Illawarra and Wests Tigers will play a Saturday afternoon match at the Sydney Cricket Ground on August 24 marking 50 years to the minute of the start of the 1963 Grand Final.

The 1963 decider is etched in Rugby League folklore. The iconic John O’Gready ‘Gladiators’ image of Wests captain Arthur Summons and Dragons captain Norm Provan covered in mud and embracing after the match provides a celebrated symbol of the game’s gladiatorial spirit and mateship that today is the centrepiece of the Premiership Trophy.

NRL CEO, Mr Dave Smith, said the Round 24 SCG clash would feature a spectacular tribute to one of the game’s most revered moments. Read more

Dragons renew 2013 Charity Shield rivalry

The St George Illawarra Dragons and South Sydney Rabbitohs today officially launched the 2013 Charity Shield and renewed their rivalry ahead of the upcoming NRL Premiership.

The 30th annual Charity Shield will be contested at ANZ Stadium, Olympic Park on Friday, February 22 and will serves as the final pre-season fixture for both Clubs.

“The Charity Shield is always a competitive contest and will serve as an important final match for us before the commencement of the 2013 season,” said Price. “This will be the last chance for players to put their hand up for selection in Round 1”. Read more

Eels break NRL crowd record

Sydney’s biggest regular season crowd for a single game in NRL history bid farewell to Parramatta Eels legends Nathan Hindmarsh and Luke Burt tonight at ANZ Stadium.

The 45,863 figure eclipsed that of the 41,835 that farewelled Hazem El Masri in 2009 when his Bulldogs side played the Warriors.

Tonight’s figure is also the NRL’s biggest crowd of the 2012 season, a mark previously held by the Round 2 Broncos v Cowboys match at Suncorp Stadium which attracted 43,171. Read more

Rabbitohs Slay Dragons

The South Sydney Rabbitohs have solidified their position in the NRL’s top four with a commanding 36-14 victory over the St George-Illawarra Dragons at ANZ Stadium tonight.

21,071 Members and supporters turned out for the Rabbitohs Members Appreciation Game, and were repaid with seven tries from the men in red and green including a hat trick to try scoring machine Nathan Merritt.

The Rabbitohs now sit equal second alongside the Melbourne Storm on the competition ladder, only two points behind the Bulldogs who sit at the top of the tree on 30 competition points. Read more

Robinson hat-trick adds to Dragons Canberra hoodoo

A match-winning hat-trick by Reece Robinson has continued Canberra’s streak at home against the Dragons with a 22-18 victory.

Robinson was the stand out, scoring two tries in two minutes and then in the 78th minute to seal a memorable win after they had trailed 18-16 late in the game.

In a grinding first half, the Raiders took control with a good short kicking game to create pressure in the opening sets. Read more

Bulldogs stun Dragons in Wollongong

Big Sam Kasiano provided the impetus for a stunning opening 20 minutes by Canterbury as they moved into second spot on the table with a 28-20 win over the Dragons in Wollongong.

“He’s unbelievable,” Kasiano’s team-mate Josh Reynolds told Channel Nine after the match. “When he goes off the field you can definitely feel the difference, he’s just got that punch and that tip on in him and he’s a massive player of the future.”

Canterbury had a sensational start to the game, taking advantage of a penalty deep inside St George Illawarra territory to open the scoring through five-eighth Josh Reynolds. Read more

Rabbitohs beat Dragons in Golden Point

Souths have recorded another golden point victory, this time against the Dragons at WIN Jubilee Oval, with halfback Adam Reynolds proving to be the field goal-kicking hero, handing the Rabbitohs a 19-18 win in front of 14,894.

Reynolds’ 82nd minute field goal gave the Rabbitohs their second golden point victory for 2012 and their sixth win for the season.

With winger Justin Hunt on debut and missing State of Origin representative players Greg Inglis and Dave Taylor, the Rabbitohs started slowly with the Dragons getting out to a 12-nil lead after 17 minutes through tries to Jason Nightingale and Jamie Soward. Read more

Dragons run of losses continues

North Queensland produced some outstanding attack and defence in front of their home crowd to snuff out St George Illawarra 30-6 at Dairy Farmers Stadium to consolidate their NRL top-eight position.

The fifth victory of 2012 continued the Cowboys’ fine record at home against the Dragons and was just the boost they needed with the representative season drawing near.

Co-captain Johnathan Thurston was outstanding for the Cowboys, helping to set up a 22-point lead by half time in a complete reversal of his team’s first half against South Sydney last weekend. Read more

Broncos hold off Dragons

Brisbane have produced a near-faultless first half in slaying the Dragons 28-20 at Suncorp Stadium.

Hooker Andrew McCullough hogged the highlights reel in the first forty with some rapid fire work from dummy half, a smart try-assist, a sublime four-pointer of his own from close range and an immaculate 40-20 kick.

The commanding 24-0 halftime lead didn’t deter the Dragons in the second period though. Read more
