Voges announces State Cricket retirement

Popular Western Warriors captain Adam Voges has today announced his retirement from domestic state cricket effective at the end of this Sheffield Shield season after a decorated 15-year career.

Voges, 37, will play at the WACA Ground for Western Australia for the final time in the Round 10 match against New South Wales from Thursday. He will also be available for the Shield final in Alice Springs against Victoria should WA qualify.

The long-serving batsman, who recently overtook John Inverarity for most wins as WA’s Sheffield Shield captain list, said it was “the right time” to retire. Read more

Dominant Scorchers lock in Home Semi-Final

The Perth Scorchers have stormed to the top of the KFC Big Bash League table in dramatic fashion and guaranteed a home semi-final with a seven-wicket win over the Hobart Hurricanes inside 14 overs at Blundstone Arena.

The result means Perth, currently top-placed, cannot finish lower than second, with the final table positions, including potential opponents, to be determined through the result of the currently in-play match between Melbourne Stars and Sydney Sixers at the MCG.

The match marked a stunning return to form for Player of the Match Shaun Marsh, who bludgeoned 57 off 34 balls, including two towering sixes and seven fours to see his side to 3-135 in pursuit of Hobart’s 6-134 with 37 balls remaining. Read more

Perth to host opening Test of 2016-17 Season

Perth will host the opening Commonwealth Bank Test of the 2016-17 summer of cricket in a break from tradition that will have current world No.1 Australia take on third-ranked South Africa at the WACA Ground from 3-7 November.

The move marks the first time since hosting Zimbabwe in October 2003 that Perth will hold the opening Test of the summer and comes as welcomed news to a state that is home to about a quarter of the country’s South African expat population, while the time difference between Western Australia and South Africa will allow for primetime viewing.

Carberry, Harris round out Scorchers roster

The Perth Scorchers have today bolstered their batting stocks with the announcement that England import Michael Carberry and emerging tyro Marcus Harris have re-signed for the Club’s historic three-peat bid in the upcoming KFC Big Bash League.

Carberry joined the Scorchers in his BBL debut for last year’s back-to-back championship triumph and cemented himself as a fan-favourite by the end of the campaign.

The 35-year-old left-hander amassed 266 runs at a 44.33 average in BBL|04, including a swashbuckling 77 not out showing against the Brisbane Heat in which he blasted six maximums and six fours. Read more

WA XI to host New Zealand under lights

The WACA Ground will this season be part of history as a Western Australian XI side hosts New Zealand in the Black Caps’ final day-night hit-out before cricket’s first Test Match under lights.

Australia and New Zealand will mark a major milestone when they play cricket’s first day-night Test Match, beginning Thursday 26 November at Adelaide Oval.

The touring side will undergo crucial preparation for the pink ball duel by meeting a WA XI side in a two-day Tour Match from 21-22 November at the WACA Ground. Read more

Primetime Scorchers to fire up The Furnace

Perth Scorchers fans will this summer get to fire up The Furnace in primetime, after today’s release of the 2015-16 Twenty20 Big Bash League fixtures unveiled a fan-focused home schedule.

The two-time defending champions will open their season with two 4:10pm matches, including a clash with the Brisbane Heat in the Boxing Day blockbuster that has become part of the fabric of the Perth summer. That tradition will be further enhanced this year with the WBBL leading into the BBL match for a Perth Scorchers double-header.

The team’s other two home matches will have the lights of The Furnace blazing down on Perth’s two biggest rivals, with the BBL|04 Final rematch against the Sydney Sixers (Saturday 2 January 2016) and a rare regular-season home match against the Melbourne Stars (Saturday 16 January 2016) both starting at 6:15pm. Victorious Fury end season on high

The Western Fury have today ended their season on a high, notching a resounding nine-wicket WT20 win over ACT Meteors at Canberra’s Manuka Oval.

The Fury entered the day having lost the opening two matches of the round to the Meteors and appeared to take those defeats personally, striking hard and fast to dismiss ACT all-out for just 76 with seven balls remaining after being sent into the field.

A Western Australian batting line-up that has at times struggled to gain momentum throughout the season looked like a different side as it powered through the chase to record the win with 10 overs to spare. Read more

Voges to steer Championship defence

Recently anointed Perth Scorchers captain Adam Voges believes his his group can claim back-to-back KFC Big Bash League championships – on one condition.

Voges, who takes the reins from the retired Simon Katich, has helped guide the Scorchers to the past two BIG Finals, including last campaign’s championship win, making Perth the most successful BBL club across the competition’s three seasons.

The 34-year-old was today announced at the WACA Season Launch as the club’s captain for the upcoming Champions League campaign and BBL|04 and said the new faces and returning ones provided Perth with a group capable of the same success, providing they brought the same work ethic. Read more

WACA to host State’s First ODI Final

The West Australian public will this summer see the state’s first One Day International final and four of the current top-five ranked ODI teams, following today’s release of the 2014-15 domestic and international cricket fixtures.

Cricket Australia today announced the WACA Ground would feature four One Day Internationals, including the final of the Carlton Mid ODI Tri Series between Australia, England and India to be held on 1 February 2015.

The timing of the match will hold global significance, with ICC regulations demanding teams name their squads for February’s Cricket World Cup by mid-January, giving the West Australian public the first opportunity to watch World Cup teams in action. Read more

North, Bolton take out top honours

Western Warriors batsman Marcus North and Fury skipper Nicole Bolton have tonight been named the 2013-14 Laurie Sawle and Zoe Goss Medallists, respectively.

The pair were honoured at the Laurie Sawle Medal Night function – the Western Australian Cricket Association’s premier awards night – at the Hyatt Regency Perth’s Grand Ballroom in front of about 400 people in a Midnight in Paris-themed event.

The win for North, who today announced his retirement from Australian domestic cricket, capped off a remarkable season, adding to his national honours of Sheffield Shield Player of the Year and skipper of the Sheffield Shield Team of the Year. Read more
