Rampart Phoenix keep slim finals hopes alive

With many pre-game suggesting a Melbourne cakewalk, Wellington have recorded a stunning 3-0 win at AAMI Park on Sunday night to give Des Buckingham and Chris Greenacre back-to-back wins over Kevin Muscat’s Victory.

On a night where much of the build up was focused on Besart Berisha’s quest to become the first player to strike 100 A-League goals, it was the Wellington Phoenix frontline that proved much the sharper.

Wellington Phoenix have put aside concerns over All White absentees to reward their faithful fans with a vintage performance on Sunday night at Westpac Stadium.

Amid furore over the International and A-League fixture clashes the focus could have easily been on who was absent rather than who was present, but the Phoenix players that pulled on the yellow and black played with a spirit and belief that keep alive Wellington’s slim finals hopes.

Phoenix urge end to international clashes

After extensive but ultimately fruitless dialogue with Football Federation Australia regarding this weekend’s clash of A-League and International fixtures, Wellington Phoenix are calling for a concrete commitment from the governing body that International windows will be integrated into the 2017-2018 season schedule.

Ahead of a crucial fixture that could prove decisive for the composition of the top six, Phoenix find themselves without seven key players for the must-win clash against Newcastle Jets.

Phoenix and Perth play out six-goal thriller

Wellington twice took a two-goal lead at QBE Stadium in front of an appreciative Auckland crowd but a high-flying Perth ensured the points were shared.

Wellington Phoenix’s co-coaches Des Buckingham and Chris Greenacre could be forgiven for being aggrieved they finished this game with just one point after their side compiled some of the best attacking passages fans have seen this season.

The home side started very brightly and twice enjoyed a two-goal buffer but Perth Glory’s never-say-die attitude saw them pull their way back into the contest, making a great spectacle for the neutrals but a nervy one for the coaches. Read more

It’s a cruel facet of football that games turn on tiny margins, and Wellington Phoenix have paid the full penalty as Melbourne City bounce back to form in emphatic fashion.

With expected thunderstorms holding, Phoenix started brightly with Roy Krishna nearly finishing a fine flowing movement inside two minutes. Wellington Phoenix have fallen just short of a memorable week for the club after Jamie Maclaren’s late goal handed Brisbane Roar all three points at Westpac Stadium on Saturday night.

Just moments shy of their third clean sheet in eight days, a mistake at the back has hurt Wellington as Brisbane Roar have picked the Phoenix’s pockets with fourth place on the A-League ladder on the line.

Wellington started brightly, and in the fourth minute Roly Bonevacia’s clever ball found Kosta Barbarouses but his wicked cross evaded his Phoenix teammates. Read more

Phoenix secure a hat-trick of wins over Mariners

On his return to the side after an injury layoff Michael McGlinchey scored in the opening 10 minutes to seal Wellington Phoenix a 1-0 win over Central Coast Mariners at Westpac Stadium on Saturday night.

The home side began the match brightly and duly took the lead 10 minutes in when McGlinchey beat the goalkeeper at the near post with a fierce drive.

Wellington continued to attack and were unfortunate not to add to their lead, particularly in the first half, but in the end the solitary strike proved enough to give the hosts the three points and put them within touching distance of the top six. Read more
